Our safety experts lead hands-on workshops where attendees learn to assess and prepare for the risks they face in their work — a high-risk assignment, an event, a remote location, an interview or ongoing coverage of a beat. We also help build holistic safety practices, policies and materials for individual media producers and a wide range of newsrooms and organizations.

Trainings & Workshops

  • Learn to assess and prepare for the risks of your specific work — whether a high-risk assignment, an event, a remote location, an interview or ongoing beat coverage. We help individuals and organizations create holistic risk assessments based on each person’s unique profile and rooted in psychological safety, covering risk mitigation, actor mapping, communications planning, security protocols and protective equipment.

  • We walk your team through covering a protest or civil unrest from pre-assignment planning through on-the-ground decision-making and post-event protocols. Training can include simulation run-throughs, gear lists and local threat-actor mapping, tailored to your newsroom’s needs.

  • We provide science-based de-escalation techniques and reading environments early, applying cognitive science, psychology, communication research and security tactics to navigating any reporting environment.

  • Training to understand, reduce and respond to the impacts of doxxing, digital harassment and online abuse, for both individuals and for newsrooms building protocols.

  • All of our sessions include consideration of journalist mental health, how to limit and address trauma exposure, engage peer support and build sustainable careers while reporting on difficult beats.

  • We work with first aid certified advisors and journalists with medical backgrounds to offer scenario-based first aid for a variety of field conditions including stop-the-bleed training, psychological first aid, and how to use each of the items in your PFAK (personal first aid kit). 

    Please note: if you want this session in addition to one other, we recommend booking a full two-day training to allow for in-depth coverage of this topic.

  • We work with journalists and newsrooms to apply a trauma-informed approach to protecting vulnerable sources, interviewing survivors, and minimizing harm across the reporting relationship.

Advising & Consultation

  • Ongoing safety advising and monitoring for your newsroom, team or project, which can include dedicated overwatch, live crisis response and other forms of applied field support.

  • We work with newsrooms, NGOs, journalism service organizations (JSOs), film sets/studios, and a variety of other media-producing organizations to craft security plans and internal duty of care policies specific to your needs.
